This takes place during God's judgment on Israel after David's sinful census of the people. The angel of the Lord was sent to bring a plague upon the land, and appeared at the threshing floor of Ornan (also called Araunah) the Jebusite. Threshing floors were elevated, open areas where grain was separated from wheat stalks, often located outside city walls.
