This verse concludes the account of Saul's disobedience when he failed to completely destroy the Amalekites as God commanded, instead sparing their king and keeping the best livestock. Samuel had just delivered God's judgment that Saul's kingdom would be torn away from him. This marked the end of the personal relationship between Samuel, Israel's last judge and first prophet, and Saul, Israel's first king.
