Solomon was building the magnificent temple in Jerusalem around 960 BC, fulfilling his father David's dream of creating a permanent dwelling place for God among the Israelites. The oracle (also called the Holy of Holies or Most Holy Place) was the innermost sanctuary where only the high priest could enter once a year. The ark of the covenant contained the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments and symbolized God's throne on earth.
