Bathsheba therefore went unto king Solomon, to speak unto him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a seat to be set for the king’s mother; and she sat on his right hand.

This scene takes place early in Solomon's reign after he had become king of Israel. Bathsheba was coming to ask Solomon to grant Adonijah (Solomon's half-brother who had tried to claim the throne) permission to marry Abishag, who had been King David's companion in his final days. In ancient royal courts, the queen mother held a position of significant honor and influence.
