This occurs during a severe drought that Elijah had proclaimed would come upon Israel as judgment for their worship of false gods under King Ahab and Queen Jezebel. God was directing Elijah to hide by the Brook Cherith, east of the Jordan River, to escape Ahab's anger and to demonstrate God's supernatural provision even in times of scarcity.
