This scene takes place during the reign of King Solomon, when the prophet Ahijah met Jeroboam on a road outside Jerusalem. Ahijah was performing a prophetic sign to show that God would divide Solomon's united kingdom of Israel into two separate kingdoms because of Solomon's unfaithfulness and idol worship. The twelve pieces represented the twelve tribes of Israel.
