This verse occurs during King David's second attempt to bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. After the first attempt failed tragically, David carefully organized the Levites according to their family lines to properly transport the sacred ark. Elizaphan was a descendant of Kohath, one of Levi's sons, and his family had specific duties in caring for the most holy objects of the tabernacle.
