This verse comes from David's second attempt to bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, after his first attempt failed because they didn't follow God's instructions. David learned that only the Levites were supposed to carry the Ark, so he carefully organized them by their family groups. The Kohathites were one of the three main Levite families, traditionally responsible for carrying the most sacred items of the tabernacle.
