Jabesh-gilead was a city east of the Jordan River whose people had a special loyalty to Saul because he had rescued them from the Ammonites early in his reign (1 Samuel 11). The Philistines had killed Saul and his sons in battle on Mount Gilboa and dishonored their bodies, hanging them on the walls of Beth-shan.
