And this land, which we possessed at that time, from Aroer, which is by the river Arnon, and half mount Gilead, and the cities thereof, gave I unto the Reubenites and to the Gadites.
At that time, we took control of this land stretching from Aroer (which sits by the Arnon River) to half of Mount Gilead, including all its cities. I gave this territory to the tribes of Reuben and Gad.
Moses is explaining how he distributed the conquered land east of the Jordan River to two of Israel's tribes as their inheritance.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Deuteronomy, Moses is recounting the Israelites' journey and conquests as they prepared to enter the Promised Land, specifically describing events after their victories over the kings east of the Jordan River. This verse details how Moses distributed portions of the conquered territory, including areas from Aroer near the Arnon River and half of Mount Gilead, to the tribes of Reuben and Gad, who had requested these lands for their livestock. This allocation reflects God's ongoing fulfillment of His covenant promises to provide and settle His people in the land He swore to their ancestors.
