His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.
Don't leave his body hanging on the tree overnight. You must bury him that same day, because anyone who is hanged is under God's curse. This will keep your land from being polluted, the land that the LORD your God is giving you as your inheritance.
This verse commands that executed criminals must be buried the same day to prevent the land from becoming spiritually contaminated by God's curse.
📚 Historical Context
In the time of Moses, God gave the Israelites specific laws to preserve holiness in the Promised Land as they prepared to settle it after their exodus from Egypt. This verse addresses the proper treatment of a criminal's body after execution by hanging, requiring burial on the same day to avoid defiling the land, which was seen as a sacred inheritance from God. It reflects ancient Near Eastern customs where exposing a corpse was believed to bring spiritual uncleanness and invite God's judgment.
