And he arose, and went into the house; and he poured the oil on his head, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I have anointed thee king over the people of the LORD, even over Israel.
So Jehu got up and went into the house. The young prophet poured oil on Jehu's head and said to him, 'This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I have anointed you as king over the LORD's people, over Israel.'
God is declaring through His prophet that He has chosen Jehu to be the new king of Israel by having oil poured on his head in a sacred ceremony.
📚 Historical Context
This takes place during a time of great corruption in Israel under King Joram and the influence of Queen Jezebel. God sent a young prophet to secretly anoint Jehu, a military commander, as the new king to carry out divine judgment against the house of Ahab. The anointing with oil was the traditional way of consecrating someone for royal office in ancient Israel.
