And he arose, and went into the house; and he poured the oil on his head, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I have anointed thee king over the people of the LORD, even over Israel.
So Jehu got up and went into the house. The young prophet poured oil on Jehu's head and said to him, 'This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I have anointed you as king over the LORD's people, over Israel.'
God is declaring through His prophet that He has chosen Jehu to be the new king of Israel by having oil poured on his head in a sacred ceremony.
📚 Historical Context
In the 9th century BC, during the reign of the idolatrous King Joram of Israel, God commanded the prophet Elisha to anoint Jehu, a military commander, as the next king to execute divine judgment on the wicked house of Ahab. This act fulfilled prophecies against Ahab's family for their promotion of Baal worship and other sins, marking a turning point in Israel's history toward purging idolatry. Jehu's anointing was a secret and urgent mission, reflecting the volatile political climate where prophets like Elisha opposed corrupt leadership.
