In those days the LORD began to cut Israel short: and Hazael smote them in all the coasts of Israel;
During that time, the LORD began to reduce Israel's territory. Hazael attacked and defeated them throughout all the borders of Israel.
God began allowing Israel's enemies to defeat them and take away parts of their land as judgment for their disobedience.
📚 Historical Context
This occurred during the reign of Jehu (841-814 BC), when Syria under King Hazael began conquering Israeli territory. Despite Jehu's initial reforms in eliminating Baal worship, he continued allowing the golden calf worship that Jeroboam had established. God had previously told Elijah that Hazael would become king of Syria and would be an instrument of judgment against unfaithful Israel.
