And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, that Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, Go in, and slay them; let none come forth. And they smote them with the edge of the sword; and the guard and the captains cast them out, and went to the city of the house of Baal.
As soon as Jehu finished offering the burnt offering, he said to the guards and captains, 'Go in and kill them all; don't let anyone escape.' So they struck them down with swords, and the guards and captains threw out the bodies and went into the inner part of Baal's temple.
Jehu used a fake religious ceremony as a trap to gather and kill all the worshipers of Baal in one place.
📚 Historical Context
This occurred around 841 BC when Jehu was carrying out God's judgment against the house of Ahab and the worship of Baal that had corrupted Israel. Jehu had pretended to be an enthusiastic Baal worshiper and called all Baal's priests and followers to a great sacrifice, but it was actually a trap to eliminate Baal worship from Israel. This was part of God's divine judgment against the idolatrous practices that Ahab and Jezebel had introduced.
