And said unto them, Hear me, ye Levites, sanctify now yourselves, and sanctify the house of the LORD God of your fathers, and carry forth the filthiness out of the holy place.
And he said to them, 'Listen to me, you Levites! Make yourselves clean and holy right now, and make the Lord's temple, the God of your ancestors, clean and holy too. Remove all the disgusting things from the sacred place.'
King Hezekiah is calling the Levites to purify themselves and cleanse God's temple by removing everything that defiles it.
📚 Historical Context
In the 8th century BC, King Hezekiah of Judah took the throne after his father Ahaz, who had promoted idolatry and allowed the Temple in Jerusalem to fall into disrepair and defilement. Hezekiah initiated a major religious reform to restore proper worship of God, beginning with the purification of the Temple that had been neglected for years. In this verse, he specifically instructs the Levites, the tribe responsible for Temple service, to cleanse themselves and remove all impurities from the holy place.
