Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon’s house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.
That's why even today, neither the priests of Dagon nor anyone who enters Dagon's temple in Ashdod will step on the doorway threshold.
This verse explains that the Philistines still avoid stepping on their temple's threshold because of what happened when God's ark was there.
📚 Historical Context
In the biblical story from 1 Samuel, the Philistines had captured the Ark of the Covenant and placed it in the temple of their god Dagon in the city of Ashdod as a trophy of their victory. The next day, they found Dagon's idol fallen on its face before the Ark, and after setting it back, it fell again and broke, demonstrating God's superior power. This event led to a lasting custom among the priests and people of avoiding the temple threshold, which was seen as cursed and continued for generations.
