And he said to Jeroboam, Take thee ten pieces: for thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, Behold, I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and will give ten tribes to thee:
And he said to Jeroboam, 'Take ten pieces for yourself, because this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Look, I will tear the kingdom away from Solomon's control and give ten tribes to you.'
God is telling Jeroboam through the prophet that He will take most of Solomon's kingdom away from him and give it to Jeroboam to rule instead.
📚 Historical Context
This prophecy came through the prophet Ahijah, who had torn his new cloak into twelve pieces to symbolize the twelve tribes of Israel. Solomon's kingdom was about to be divided because of his disobedience to God, particularly his worship of foreign gods influenced by his many foreign wives. This moment marks the beginning of the split that would create the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah.
